$200 needed for new clothes for teen
A teen girl that attends the Friendship House is in desperate need of new clothes. Money is nonexistent for her guardian to help her get them. She has outgrown her current clothes and is repeatedly wearing the few that still fit.
The money will go to help the same student who received free (and urgent) dental care just a couple weeks ago.
By early next week we hope to be able to take her shopping to Wal-Mart or Target to buy some new clothes that will fit (and be in style… very important!). Our goal is at least $200.
We currently have $30 in hand. If you are able to help her out, you may drop off the money at the Association office (3926 Plantation Rd, NE) or mail it to:
Baptist Friendship House
635 Elm Ave., SW
Roanoke, VA 24016
Checks can be made out to Roanoke Valley Baptist Association with “teen clothes” as the subject.
Thank you so much, and God bless.
Youth Food Needs for Friendship House
We just started up summer activities for the youth living around the Friendship House. They came over for the first time this past Monday. Three came over and hung out for about 2.5 hours.
During their time, the three of them consumed eight sodas and seven bags of chips. I quickly did math and realized that I needed to make another run to Sam’s Club and load up.
My math was reinforced when eight came over Tuesday and just tore through the food.
These youth do not have the opportunity to “graze” at home and eat and drink until they are full. We all know how much teenagers eat – I’ve certainly been reminded.
We could use infusions of:
- Soda: Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, and Pepsi are favorites.
- Fruit drinks: CapriSun, Hi-C, etc.
- Chips: The individual bags seem to work well and cut down on messes and germs.
- Other snacks such as Cheez-its, Graham Crackers, etc.
- Ramen Noodles
- Easy-Mac
This will be a standing need. These youth don’t have the best home situations and would rather hang out at the Friendship House. Anything we as an Association can do to make it a home for them will go a long way.
Thank you, and God bless.

Looking towards Fall
Yes, Summer is barely here, but we are evaluating our ministry needs for Fall. So far, we have two big efforts this fall:
- To stabilize the After School Ministry at Baptist Community Center through specialized classes, a Conduct Covenant, and new types of hands-on Bible lessons.
- Connecting churches with the ministries at both Friendship House and Community Center.
So far we’ve identified three ways to help meet our needs for the Fall:
- Five team leaders, one for each day of the week, for our After-School Ministry. The team leader will assist us in recruiting 10-12 volunteers for the team and rotate the schedule to ensure at least four volunteers are there each week. Knowing that there is a deep pool of volunteers with schedules kept by someone else will free Pat’s time to develop more ministries for the children.
- Teams of churches to help provide meals once a month for the Ladies Bible Club at the Friendship House. Currently we need one team for the 1st Thursday and one for the 4th Thursday. In the past, WMU circles have helped, but anyone or any group can is welcome to help.
- Folks who could periodically lead a Bible study in the morning for our ladies. Along with the Bible study, our ladies simply desire fellowship, attention, and love.
While more specifics are being hammered out, we do know that we need are prayer and volunteers.
We also know for these ministries to have a chance at reaching our communities, we cannot do it alone. We pray that God will allow us to meet willing volunteers who can offer us just a small amount of time out of their busy week.
If you would like to learn more about what God’s doing in inner-city Roanoke, we would be happy to talk to you and even give you a tour as you decide what works best for you. You may call Nathan at 343.5437 or email him at nathan@bmc.rvba.org for more information.
