Information on sponsoring a $30 Angel Food box for one of our families
I have never had to worry about from where my next meal will come. However, in the 4 months I’ve served at the Mission Centers, I’ve learned that many of the families we serve live with what’s called “food insecurity”.
For the past two months, we have experimented in taking orders for our families for Angel Food boxes.
Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit and non-denominational Christian organization that seeks to assist lower-income families.
Operating since 1994, Angel Food Ministries serves over 500,000 families across the country each month. They offer a $30 food box containing over $60 worth of food.
The food is top-quality and plentiful – the five families who have participated so far look forward to the next month’s box.
The menu changes monthly. Here is what’s offered for September:
1.5 lb. Rib eye Steaks (3 x 8 oz.)
1.81 lb. (avg.) Perdue Tray Pack
Split Chicken Breast (2 large breasts)
4 lb. Chicken Thighs
1.5 lb. Pork Chops (4 x 6 oz.)
1 lb. 80/20 Lean Ground Beef
1.5 lb. 100% White Meat Turkey Burgers (4 x 6 oz.)
12 oz. Deli Ham
1 lb. Frozen Sweet Potatoes
1 lb. Frozen Green Beans
15 oz. Pears (Product of U.S.A.)
12 oz. Orange Juice Concentrate
(100% juice, no sugar added – makes over a quart of juice)
3 lb. bag Fresh Idaho Potatoes
2 lb. bag Fresh Onions
32 oz. 2% Shelf Stable Milk
Dozen Eggs
Dessert
As you can see, just the meat alone would cost $30, if not more, at the grocery store! View the full September menu to see other available options.
However, in the two months we’ve placed orders for our families for Angel Food boxes, we have found that a significant number cannot even afford the $30.
Here’s where you and/or your small group, missions group, or Sunday School class can help: By sponsoring a $30 box of food each month, you can directly and greatly improve the life of a local family. Mission Center staff would then place the order with Angel Food, pick up the box, and deliver it to the family.
A creative way to help can be to order a box of food for yourself. The $30 that you save from not buying the food at full retail can then be used to help a family at the mission enters.
If desired, prayer cards can be offered with ways to pray for the sponsored family. A note of encouragement can be included with the box to let the family know that you are praying for them. In God’s timing as relationships are built, other opportunities to further serve the family may appear.
I firmly believe sponsoring an Angel Food box can be an incredible way for Association churches and their members to make a concrete and positive impact on the lives of our lower-income families.
Please call Nathan White, Baptist Mission Centers Director, at 540.632.2632 if you and/or your group feel called to sponsor a box.
